Emergency Room Delays

A recent editorial by the NewYork Times on Delays in Emergency Rooms points a growing problem in the US healthcare system. Due to uninsured patients and patients who lack primary care physicians coming to the emergency room for routine treatments like cough, cold or minor injuries, patients who are in a real emergency are being made to wait longer then is required. I,having worked in the ER for the last few years on patient throughput issues, know what impact ER overcrowding can have on the patients, physicians as well as other healthcare staff.

Solar Water Heaters

I have been in Belgaum in India for the last couple of days. Belgaum is a small sleepy city located in North Karnataka located between Mumbai and Bangalore. While visiting some of my relatives places I noticed that almost all the new houses that have been constructed within the last few years have a solar water heater installed. I was really amazed seeing almost all new houses been fitted with this renewable energy device. People in a small city like belgaum are making their own unique contribution to fight (knowingly or unknowingly) global warming. It definitely saves them money in-terms of their electricity costs. If a city like belgaum can have so many solar water heaters, I can only imagine what the volume would be like in cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. Compare this to the United States. I have not yet seen a single water heater using solar energy.

Indian Cricket Dominated by One Caste?

According to Andrew Stevenson in the Sunday Morning Herald , caste plays a dominate role in the way Indian team is selected. This is the most propostrous argument that has been ever made. Just the fact the the current playing 11 comprises of 7 brahmins does not mean that they were picked because the were brahmin. Does Andrew Stevenson think that Sachin Tendulkar or Anil Kumble would not be in the Indian Cricket team if he was of another caste or creed. I do not think so. All of the cricketers in the team deserve to be there and are selected based on merit and not some cast based politics. There is too much riding ( read money) on the success of the team to have any room for this sort of petty political gimmick. Thankfully, Salil Thripathi sets the record stratight
